Increases Motivation
It’s inspiring and motivating to be surrounded by dedicated, like-minded individuals in your group fitness class. Group fitness is a great way to help motivate yourself and others to dig deeper and push yourself during workouts.

Encourages Structure
Group fitness is a great way to get a workout in without having to think much. Most classes are structured starting with a warm-up, transitioning into a balanced workout and finishing up with a cool down. Following the routine of your group fitness class will help you get into the swing of things with each passing week.

Teaches Proper Form
It’s the fitness instructor’s job to not only show proper form to class participants, but to also make sure that everyone in the class is executing each exercise the right way. Proper form is important so you can get the best results from the exercise, and it’s important especially in preventing potential injuries.

Offers Variety
There are group classes available for almost every kind of workout. From yoga, to spin class to kickboxing – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Having a variety of classes in your weekly workout regimen is a great way to create muscle confusion, which keeps your body guessing and ramps up your metabolism. It also helps prevent boredom.

Some facilities require members to sign up in advance for specific classes, which is a great way to stay accountable for your workouts. If you’re signed up and it’s on your schedule, there’s a good chance you won’t skip out on it. There is also a means of accountability among classmates as everyone is constantly encouraging each other to keep it up throughout the workouts.

It’s Just So Fun
There’s really no other way to put it: Group fitness classes are packed full of fun. Between the upbeat music, a great workout and a group of people motivating each other along the way, it’s an enjoyable way to exercise.

If you’re unsure of where to go, or what you’re looking for in a good coach, here are a few helpful tips that will let you know you’ve found the right one:

Tip #1: Find an organization that is focused on both you and your family:
The first step is to find the right organization that is focused on both you and your family. If you’re looking for a place that focuses solely on giving you the proper training and skill set for exercise and sport, Solaris Sports Club is the right pick for you. If you live in Chappaqua, NY and other surrounding areas, it is a close location for both you and your family to get to throughout the day.

Tip #2: Find a coach with the right education.
Meeting the staff is an important step when it comes to looking for the right team for your child. Our tennis instructors at Solaris know how to keep everyone engaged and excited toward both the game as well as continuing to have fun throughout their day. It is important to always keep your coaches updated on any issues that you deem as important, whether they’re behavioral or otherwise. No one knows your child more than you do, so it is important that our staff is able to make your child as comfortable as possible, while also helping them learn and succeed in sport.

If you think your child is ready for a larger team setting, our coaches at Solaris will work hard to create the comfortable and fun environment you’re looking for. They are working professionals who have become trained and certified within the Tennis Association, and have several years of experience to give your child some of the best years toward their team experiences. Here at Solaris Sports Club, we’re focused on bettering you and your children toward continuing to live a happy, healthy, and fit lifestyle.

Tip #3: Watch a sample lesson.
If you’re ready to sign up for just one or two lessons, you may want to stick around before heading out to do your daily workout and see how your child’s coach operates. Here are some good questions to ponder:
1. Was the coach on time? Did the lesson begin on time?
2. Did the coach have a definite plan for the lesson and did he carry it out? Did the plan vary with each lesson, or does the coach show a numbing lack of creativity?
3. Did the coach engage your child as the lesson proceeded? Did the coach communicate to your child that he cared about him and his progress?
Coaching is teaching, and some people work well with one another, while others don’t. It’s important that both you and your child have a clear understanding and both feel happy and comfortable with their lessons. Our club works to keep both our members and our staff excited to both teach and learn together.

If you wish to sign up for tennis lessons at Solaris Sports Club, contact our Tennis Director Geoffrey Jagdfeld to schedule private lessons at (914) 962-4094 ext. 13 or geoff@solarisclubs.com today!

Staying active is a huge part of many residents lives in Hawthorne, New York. You’re ready to hit the elliptical machine or run the trails, but before you do, it’s important for you to consider doing a brief warm-up, followed by a quick cool-down session post workout. Sure, a warm-up and cool-down may add a few minutes to your exercise routine, but they also work wonders to help you and your body stay healthier.

Why a warm up and cool down is important:
Warm-ups and cool-downs generally involve doing activity at a slower pace and reduced intensity.
Warming up will help you prepare your body for any aerobic activity during your workout. A warm up gradually accelerates your cardiovascular system, increasing the blood flow toward your muscles, raising your body temperature. Warming up also helps to reduce any muscle soreness and lessen your risk of injury. Although there’s controversy about whether warming up and cooling down can prevent injuries, proper warm-ups and cool-downs pose little risk. So if you’ve got the time, consider including them in your workout routine.

How to warm up:
Warm up right before you plan to start your workout. In general, warm up focusing first on the larger muscle groups, such as your triceps, biceps, and hamstrings. Then you can decide to do exercises more specific to your sport or activity, if necessary. A warm-up may cause mild sweating, but it shouldn’t leave you fatigued.

Here are some examples of warm-up activities:
• To warm up for a brisk walk, walk slowly for five to 10 minutes.
• To warm up for a run, walk briskly for five to 10 minutes.
• To warm up for swimming, swim slowly at first and then pick up the tempo as you’re able.

How to cool down:
Cooling down after your workout allows for the gradual recovery of your heart rate and blood pressure. Cooling down may be the most important aspect of a workout for competitive athletes, such as marathoners, because it helps regulate your blood flow.
• To cool down with a light exercise, do a couple jumping jacks. Jumping jacks are a very effective exercise; through the motions of your arms and legs, you’re working almost your entire body.
• To cool down for swimming, treading water works just as well as jumping jacks through the use of stretching all of your muscles.
• To cool down after a run, work on a light jog or a walk.

Cool downs may not be as important as warm ups according to many studies, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do them. It’s important for you to work at a lighter pace in order to gradually bring your body back to a pre-workout state. Cool downs are a great way to treat your body right after a rough exercise and if you treat your body right today, it’ll treat you right tomorrow. Both warming up and cooling down play huge roles in protecting participants from being at risk for injury.

At Solaris Sports Club we encourage all our participants to engage in safe activity with warming up and cooling down so our members can have a safe, successful workout! For more information on our facilities and services in Hawthorne contact us today!

August is in full swing. Students are getting ready to head back to school and vacation time is over for a number of career folks. Soon people will be back at their desks, staying still for most of the day. It may be time for you to consider getting some physical activity into your daily routine.
Yes, exercise is a popular means of staying active, but motivation may be hard to come by. But know that exercise benefits more than your body. Your body benefits most noticeably, of course.

Some physical benefits of staying active include:
• Weight control.
• Reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease.
• Strengthens your bones.
• Reduces the risk of some cancers.
• Improves your mental health.

Yet staying active and exercising can also improve your mental health and brain function, which may also have long-term positive effects. Here are some things that may surprise you about the mental benefits of exercise and staying active.

Exercise improves brain growth.
As we age, the birth of new brain cells begins to slow down our brain tissue starts to shrink. Staying active by exercising may reverse this trend. Researchers have found that the improved cardiovascular fitness that comes with increased exercise is associated with fewer age-related changes in the brains of older people.
Fitness Fact: Cardio boosts blood flow to the brain.

Exercise fights depression & anxiety.
People who are diagnosed or struggle with depression may experience increased ability to manage their symptoms.
Exercise has been proven to help lift a person’s mood by increasing the level of endorphins in the body. Exercise produces serotonin and dopamine, which are critical for brain function and effective management of the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Exercise reduces stress.
Along with boosting your mood, exercise and staying active lowers cortisol levels, which helps people think more clearly. Exercise is believed to help generate new nerve cells in an area of the brain that helps to relieve stress. So a little movement to your day can really help you let off the load.

Exercise increases your sensitivity to insulin.
When you eat, your body turns most of your food into glucose, or blood sugar. When your brain cells are flooded by glucose it can affect your memory and thinking process. Consistent exercise can help reverse insulin resistance and stabilize your blood sugar. The better blood-sugar control, the more protected your brain is from memory loss.

Staying active throughout your day- to- day life is crucial for your overall physical and mental health. If you think it may be time to get out there and start moving again, contact us today at Solaris Sports Clubs. Our facilities in Hawthorne, Stamford and Yorktown have everything that you need to continue staying active and staying healthy!

Kids Tennis Club

Youth sports can have many benefits for kids, and can positively affect the way your children thrive in school as well as throughout their life. Some of these benefits include learning the sport, understanding what it takes to compete with others, and the enjoyment of being part of a team. Playing sports teaches youngsters about responsibility and being part of a team, leading up to the importance of teamwork.

It’s important to see how your children grow with the sport, how they learn different skills, and knowing that the skills they’re learning in their sport can go farther than the game!

Participating in sports can do more than just building physical skills:
• Psychological Well-Being- Playing a sport can work to boost your children’s self-esteem, which in turn can increase their confidence in other things such as school and t
• Social Interaction- There interaction that your children will have… the socialization that occurs in sorts will help your children learn the effective skill for interacting with both their peers and adults.
• Character Building- Kids can learn how to cooperate with others and play fairly. Also builds a strong self-discipline. Self-discipline is a great quality for succeeding everyday academically. Sports participation may enhance critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, too.
• Watch for the Downsides- The focus of sports participation should center on learning skills, developing teamwork and having fun. If a focus turns toward unhealthy competition, the experience could become a negative one.

There are many different ways that sports can give that educational push toward students of any age. For the most part, school sports teams know that for your child, school comes first. To follow, here are some examples as to how sports can help your children thrive in school and their future:

1. Sports Teams Require Students to Earn the Privilege
Students are often required to maintain a good average from their teachers in order to be eligible to play on a sport. If students want to get on the field, the court, or the ice, they have to earn that privilege by performing well in the classroom. Therefore, playing sports can help to serve as motivation for doing well in the classroom.

2. Children Develop Better Focus
By concentrating their efforts on becoming eligible to play by doing well in class, students tend to learn to focus their mind on the subject matter. This helps to allow children to learn more than they did without the motivation, helping them get the most out of time spent in class and studying.

3. Children Gain a Better Sense of Self
Playing sports often boosts a child’s sense of self-worth because they are surrounded by their teammates, who can become the best of friends. The increased social status often results in an improved attitude that often translates into the child becoming more enthusiastic toward a variety of activities — including academics!

4. Students Who Play Sports Have the Potential for Scholarships
One of the top benefits of participating in sports is that athletes who perform well in their chosen field and meet their academic responsibilities may be able to win a scholarship. While the scholarship may be based on their success in sports, it gives young people the chance to gain an education that might not otherwise be affordable.
